The protagonist, Araragi, is walking home from school

Araragi is walking home from school, and as he gets closer to his home, he begins to feel a sense of dread. He can’t quite put his finger on why, but something feels off. As he approaches his home, he sees that someone has spray-painted “Beware the Reaper” on his door. The only thing Araragi can think of is that it’s likely a warning from one of his classmates, so he goes inside to investigate.

As Araragi enters his home, he notices that everything is in disarray – there are clothes everywhere and dishes left untouched on the kitchen table. It doesn’t take Araragi long to figure out what happened – his sister Karen murdered their father and committed suicide by lighting herself on fire in their bedroom. Araragi is devastated by this news and spends the entire night wandering around aimlessly, eventually collapsing in front of the local temple.

The next day, Araragi wakes up feeling somewhat better considering what has happened. He decides to go visit Karen’s grave, but as soon as he arrives at the cemetery, he starts feeling uneasy again – it seems like someone is watching him. Suddenly, Araraghi feels a sharp pain in his gut and collapses to the ground unconscious…

Araragi declines and goes home

Araragi has spent the last few days avoiding Oshino, but today he runs into him on his way to school. Araragi apologizes and tells Oshino that he’s not feeling well and needs to go home. Oshino looks disappointed but lets Araragi go. Araragi feels bad about it but knows that he needs to take care of himself.

Araragi spends the day in a daze, not really knowing what to do with himself. He doesn’t feel like going out or talking to anyone, so he just sits in his room all day. Around 4 PM, he starts getting a headache and decides that maybe it would be better if he went home.

As he’s walking home, Araragi thinks about how lucky he is that Oshino is such a good friend and always lets him rest when he’s feeling sick. He feels grateful for everything that Oshino has done for him and resolves to make more time for him from now on.

Araragi talks to Karen about what he plans to do after school

Karen tells Araragi that she hopes he isn’t too busy after school, to which Araragi replies that he will make time for her. The two continue talking until Araragi has to go to his next class.

Araragi spends the night at Senj

a small shrine that is said to be haunted by a vengeful spirit. When he falls asleep, Araragi has a dream in which he encounters his ex-girlfriend Hitagi Senjougahara. In the dream, Hitagi tells him that she’s pregnant and that she wants to have their child together. Araragi is overjoyed at the prospect of becoming a father, but then Hitagi says that she’s not sure if she can really go through with it and asks Araragi to break up with her. Distraught at the prospect of losing her, Araragi wakes up from his dream just as the sun begins to rise.
